Bulk cargo
The Port of Duisburg has established itself as an effective transshipment point for various types of bulk cargo. Mineral oils, chemical products, scrap metal, additives for the metal industry, building materials and coal account for most of this and are available for the numerous, usually highly-specialized transshipment companies located at duisport.
duisport is the most important hub for coal in Germany’s interior. Five coal terminals can handle up to ten million tons of coal per year. The coal, which is mostly imported from Australia, China, Columbia, Poland and South Africa, is transported to Duisburg on the Rhine with pusher trains with a capacity of up to 18,000 metric tons, mostly via Rotterdam and Amsterdam. After the coal has been prepared to customer specifications using breaking and mixing equipment, it is shipped to power plants and the steel industry across Germany by rail or inland water vessel.
Tank capacities of 0.6 million cubic meters and 19 handling facilities are available for liquid cargo. In addition, more than 100,000 metric tons of scrap are correctly sorted in the Port of Duisburg every month and delivered to steel plants in Germany and abroad.
Packing in 4D
The various heavy lift terminals also offer exporting companies in the machine and plant building sector the best conditions for efficient handling of high-quality general cargo up to 500 metric tons. Heavy goods and packing activities are bundled according to the motto “Packing in 4D” in the north port area on the approximately 48,000 m2 site of duisport packing logistics. Facilities available here include a multi-purpose hall for storing goods of all types and a packing building with trimodal connections and a heavy goods overhead crane for packing components of complex industrial plants.
The outer port has also become the home of the Heavy Lift Terminal Duisburg (HTD), another option for handling high-quality and heavy general cargo.
With these offerings, the Port of Duisburg has also become a leading logistics hub in the heavy goods segment.
