Saskia, Hendrik and Kristin, apprentices, industrial clerk
“We have been at Duisburger Hafen AG since August 2014. During that time, we have gained a lot of insights into work life at the port, as well as a lot of interesting experiences. A couple of weeks before the start of the apprenticeship, each apprentice was assigned a senior apprentice who acted as a mentor, and who was able to help with many questions and provided support.
Since our group of companies has many subsidiaries, it is possible to work in many departments with many different focus areas. That provides a lot of variety in terms of training. So far, we have worked in the IT, Sales and Project Implementation departments. Each department offers something new, and you always gain new insights into the different areas (e.g. packing and project freight forwarding).
We were quickly integrated into each new department and became part of the team. We took on both independent and supportive tasks, and took part in meetings and customer visits. In addition, we are in regular contact with other apprentices and the apprentice supervisor. Meetings, seminars and preparatory courses for the final exam are also organized.
As the highlight of this year, we will represent duisport at "transport logistic", a leading international trade fair for logistics, in Munich.
At the trade school, which we attend twice a week, we acquire the theoretical knowledge that we can then put into practice in departments such as HR or finance and accounting.
We really like the training at the port of Duisburg, and are looking forward to the rest of our apprenticeship."
Malte, apprentice, industrial clerk and Bachelor of Arts
“University studies or vocational training: that was the question I considered before graduating from high school. duisport offered me an opportunity to combine both of these aspirations.
In addition to my training as industrial clerk at duisport, I also attend FOM (Technical University for Economics and Management) in Duisburg to obtain my Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration. Since these courses are held on Friday evening and Saturday, it requires one to invest more time than for a conventional training period. But it is worth it, since the knowledge conveyed here at duisport, along with the training itself, is very diverse and can be applied both in the operational setting and at the trade school. My work week is very varied: Three practical days in operations are supplemented by two days at the trade school and lectures at FOM. But I still have time for my hobbies.
The advantages of dual-track studies consist of the direct connection to practice and the two degrees after approximately 3.5 years, and of course the money earned during my studies.
duisport makes it easier for apprentices to enter work life. The departments are very welcoming, and one quickly has the feeling that one belongs and is able to take on tasks involving responsibility at an early stage. The different company divisions and subsidiaries offer a lot of different assignment possibilities.
I am excited and looking forward to everything there is in store during the rest of my training."
Linda, apprentice, freight forwarding and logistics services agent
"I have been at duisport for a year, when I started my internship. At this time, I am completing my training as freight forwarding and logistics services agent. This location organizes global transports from Germany to Australia, for example. I was already able to gain a lot of interesting insights into work life and this profession during my internship. During my training period, I also have the opportunity to learn more about many different departments, e.g. truck scheduling or air and sea freight processing. The planning and implementation of transports from the time the order is accepted to the time custom duties have been processed offers a lot of variety in terms of tasks. I always learn and discover new things. My colleagues make it possible for me to work independently, so that I can learn things on my own. At the same time, the work is done not alone but in cooperation with others - it is work that is a lot of fun, demanding and varied. I feel very comfortable in my team.
I am happy to be completing my education at duisport, and look forward to the next two years."
Alexandra, apprentice, management assistant in real estate
"I started my apprenticeship for management assistant in real estate at Duisburger Hafen AG in August 2014. In that time, I have seen and learned a lot of new and exciting things.
The term starts with an introduction week, which is a good opportunity to get to know the other apprentices and to learn more about the company and the port in a pleasant atmosphere.
After that week, I started working in my first departments, namely building and real estate management. These departments are mainly concerned with the management of the land, industrial buildings and office buildings located in the port.
I was well integrated in the department right from the beginning. My nice and helpful colleagues in particular facilitated my entry into professional life.
I am given a lot of tasks that I can learn on my own, and I am learning a lot about the special features of commercial and in particular port-specific real estate. My duties include regular office activities such as writing letters to tenants and using the telephone (administrative duties). I also help with the preparation of rental, lease and building lease contracts and incidental cost settlements. In addition, I often accompany others to off-site meetings and thus learn to deal with customers, suppliers, service providers and our subsidiaries. I am particular impressed with the size of everything. For example, a land parcel may easily cover 10,000 square meters, and a warehouse 5,000 square meters.
Since the tasks related to building and real estate management can be quite extensive, I have only learned a part so far, and I am excited to see what tasks await me in the future.
I visit the EBZ (European Education Centre for Residential and Real Estate Management) in Bochum one week per month. There, I obtain all of the theoretical knowledge related to real estate management which is required for the IHK exam. May main fields are:
I really like my education, since it is very varied and also demanding. I receive my training in a very specialized area of real estate management, which would not have been possible at a company in the residential management sector, and therefore I am very happy to work at "duisport"."
Marcelo and Tobias, apprentices, expert for warehouse logistics
"The training for warehouse logistic expert at duisport packing logistics GmbH, a subsidiary of Duisburger Hafen AG, offers a varied training period with its different departments. Packing is one of the most important areas. It involves the use of different tools and machines, such as buzz saws, compressed air nail guns and welding guns, and the packing of equipment and machines in wood packaging. In addition to packing, we also learn to properly load and unload trucks.
As part of the training, one also acquires the crane and forklift license, since they play a big part in daily work life. The colleagues in the different areas are always available to help with problems related to the workplace. The good working relationships between colleagues makes for a pleasant work environment. Working in a team is very important, and also a lot of fun.
Outside of work, there are also opportunities to get involved in sports, e.g. the internal football team, which is always happy to welcome new members.
At the same time, the trade school also offers an exciting week during which one learns more about the theory of warehouse logistics processes. Apprentice meetings or other events are also frequently held in order to encourage exchange among apprentices."
Simon and Hendrik, apprentices, wood mechanic
"Completing your training at an employer such as duisport packing logistics GmbH means that you are able to experience diverse and above all very interesting work areas in logistics and wood processing from the beginning.
During the course of your training, you obtain knowledge as well as various skills from the production of customized packaged goods to the loading or shipping of equipment and machines in a variety of departments.
"Industrial building packing" or "Production" are important training stations in this regard.
Training on the cranes and forklifts taught us how to handle different ground mounted lifting machines, which play an important role in supporting the work processes at the company. We also learned to handle a variety of tools and machines, such as compressed air nail guns, buzz saws and welding guns."
Verein Immersatt e.V. in Duisburg has set itself the task of giving children and young people from disadvantaged families nourishment and helping them with their homework. duisport supports the association not only financially, the apprentices also make a valuable contribution. This is what the apprentices have to report: “We apprentices at the duisport Group have put aside our jobs for a day to lend a helpful hand to the association. Our day began a 6:00 a.m. with packing school lunches for the students and delivering them to the schools. Next we prepared lunch by peeling potatoes and chopping up fruit by the bucket. None of us had probably ever cooked in such dimensions before! After lunch, we helped out the children by supervising their homework. Work was followed by fun: The children and young people took visible pleasure in beating us in “Memory” and other table games. It was an exciting day for both the children and the apprentices! We learned a great deal and had a lot of fun!”
