The central location of the Port of Duisburg in Germany and the European economic region, excellent transportation connections and not least the successful transformation from a classic port/cargo handling operation to an efficient logistics industry partners, open up new perspectives.
A structural change at the Port of Duisburg: The duisport Group is continually developing into an in-demand solution provider in automotive logistics and has already formulated tailored logistics concepts with the most successful German automotive manufacturers.
.
Premium auto manufacturer Audi was the first automotive group of companies to select Duisburg for its logistics activities. In Summer 2013, logistics operations commenced at Audi's CKD (Completely Knocked Down) Center, its largest in the world. At logport II in the south of Duisburg, the duisport Group has invested approximately 25 million EUR in an area of over 100,000 sq.m and a 53,000 sq.m building complex. At these premises, the automotive logistics company Schnellecke Logistics packages 800,000 cubic meters of Audi car components every year from suppliers all over Europe, which are sent by container to overseas locations in China, India and soon Mexico as well. Thanks to the multimodal transport solutions offered by the duisport Group, goods are shipped to Western ports solely by ship and train. This does away with approximately 13,000 road trips every year - a very important factor for Audi in view of the sustainability of this logistics solution.
In 2014, Audi was followed by parent company Volkswagen, which manages the shipping of components and car parts for its overseas plants through the world's largest inland port. Since March 2014, Volkswagen has used the Duisburg logistics location to supply approximately 4,000 different car parts to its production locations in North and South America, India, China, South Africa and Malaysia. Every year, up to 1.8 million packaged items are loaded in overseas containers and then shipped in an environmentally responsible manner, mainly through water and rail connections in combined transportation.
The Duisburg-Kaßlerfeld logistics location, which is home to Volkswagen's 24,000 square meter logistics center, has its own connection to Autobahn A 40 and is thus ideally connected to the international shipping network. Not least duisport's network of numerous direct connections by rail and inland barge to Western ports was an important site criterion for Volkswagen.
In August 2014, the loading of finished automobiles from premium German manufacturers for overland export to China began for the first time. Over a 10,300 km long railway connection between the Chinese industrial metropolis Chongqing (population 30 million) and Europe's most important logistic hub in Duisburg, customers could transport their goods quickly to the growing Chinese market. However, this was less expensive than air freight and much faster than seagoing vessels. The vehicles were loaded securely at the Duisburg Terminal DIT in containers, loaded onto the train and transported to Chongqing, as well as other destinations in China.
In 2017, a 25,000 sq.m building for Daimler AG was constructed on the Mercatorinsel in the Duisburg harbor area on an area of 100,000 sq.m, and a second building of the same size is to be built by 2019. From there the individual parts and vehicle components for the worldwide production network of the Mercedes-Benz Vans division of Daimler AG are consolidated, packed and shipped. The site is located in the immediate vicinity of existing container terminals for the onward transport of Daimler components. 500 new jobs will be established after the completion of all construction phases.
