Germany’s Westernmost Sea Port

Over 2,000 sea-going river vessels call at the Port of Duisburg every year. These barges can carry as much as 6,000 tonnes of cargo. Ships from Duisburg serve over 100 European sea ports and inland ports located close to the coast.

Short-sea shipping is gaining in importance. Jammed highways and growing road traffic restrictions make this mode of transportation increasingly attractive.

Scandinavia, the British Isles, Spain and Portugal are linked to Duisburg by scheduled services. The benefits of short sea shipping are easy to see. Transportation is reliable, timing can be planned, costs are low, cargo is moved on the direct route without reloading and, last, but not least, impacts on the environment are reduced.

The fast progress made by direct container lines between duisport and the United Kingdom show the true potential of short sea shipping. The number of standard container units shipped has seen a fivefold increase since 1998. Reputed short sea shipping lines have set up offices in Duisburg to offer customers their expertise.

To contribute to the development of short sea shipping, duisport is one of the partners of the Short-sea shipping Promotion Center whose objectives include the creation of new ship-based transportation routes.
