Efficient, Reasonably Priced and Reduced Impacts on the Environment

Barges connect the countries of Europe unlike other means of transportation.

50 percent of barge shipments move cargo to foreign destinations.

duisport is located in the center of Europe's system of navigable waterways and situated directly on the Rhine River which is the busiest waterway in Europe and accounts for over half of all inland shipping on the continent.

Ships departing from Duisburg sail to all German inland ports and to a great number of other European destinations. Over 10,000 kilometers of waterways can be navigated by barges which carry 1,350 or more tonnes.

duisport also has a key role to play as a hinterland hub for the ports of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Antwerp. Half of the cargo moved through Rotterdam and Antwerp arrives or departs on barges.

duisport is each year called at by some 20,000 ships including pusher barge combinations which are capable of carrying 18,000 tonnes of cargo.

For long hauls, barges are the lowest-cost and the most reliable means of transportation with the added benefit of minimum environmental impacts.

To strengthen shipping, waterways must be integrated in overall logistic chains which require multimodal cargo transfer facilities. duisport has for many years pursued a policy which supports this trend.
