General cargo is increasingly moved by containers.
Eight modern trimodal container terminals including combined rail/road terminals provide all container services shipping lines, forwarders, freighters and shippers may need.
However, duisport has remained an important center for the transfer of conventional non-containerized cargo such as steel products or paper.
Numerous port operators have specialized in general cargo services. Apart from pure cargo transfer operations (usually roof-covered), they offer extra links in the value chain.
Three steel service centers are, for instance, installed in the Port of Duisburg. Heavy cargo weighing as much as 300 tonnes is also welcome in Duisburg.
