Think big!

Coal, oil, chemical products, scrap, additives for the metal industries and building materials are the types of bulk cargo most frequently handled in the Port of Duisburg. Numerous port operators which are in most cases highly specialized offer optimized cargo handling and added-value services.

Imported coal is, for example, handled by eight coal terminaling companies which supply coal received today from the U.S., South Africa, Poland, Australia and Colombia to power stations and the steel industry in the region. The five duisport coal terminals are designed for a total annual capacity of eight million tonnes.

Duisburg is Germany’s largest inland coal hub. Pusher-barge combinations carrying as much as 18,000 tonnes move the coal from Rotterdam or Amsterdam on the Rhine River to Duisburg.

Trains take the coal to users after it has been crushed, ground and mixed to customer specifications.

Some 0.6 million cubic meters of tankage and 19 terminals handle liquid cargo.

Over 100,000 tonnes of scrap are also sorted in Duisburg each month and delivered to steel mills in Germany and other countries.
