logport-Ruhr – two strong partners under one roof
duisport and RAG Montan Immobilien found logport-Ruhr / Further networking of Ruhr region via duisport creates largest inland logistics turntable in Europe
Munich, October 6 2008. Duisburger Hafen AG (duisport) and RAG Montan Immobilien GmbH made public their joint development and marketing company, logport-Ruhr, today. In the presence of Oliver Wittke, Minister for Construction and Transport of the State of North Rhine Westphalia, both companies introduced the aims of the joint venture at the commercial real estate exhibition Expo Real in Munich: strengthening both the Ruhr region economically and logistics expertise in NRW as well as networking the Ruhr region so that it becomes the largest inland logistics turntable in Europe.
With state politicians behind them and their intention to strengthen logistics sector expertise in NRW, both companies are going to jointly market suitable sites in the Ruhr region as attractive logistics locations. In doing so Duisburger Hafen AG’s logport brand is bringing its proven know-how in developing and marketing brownfield sites for logistics relocations. The logport brand stands for high qualitative value and customer orientated system solutions for all service providers connected with logistics. The basis of the joint venture from RAG Montan Immobilien’s point of view is the extensive supply of real estate in the Ruhr from the RAG Group’s inventory as well as its experience in cleaning up real estate formerly used for industrial purposes and preparing it for construction.
NRW-Minister Oliver Wittke greeted the “strategic alliance” between the two companies. “Such cooperation between two strong partners which are anchored in the region complements almost ideally our aim to promote further economic development in the state with logistics clusters. Here, striving for economic success will be a win-win situation for all participants, including the state of NRW.”
Erich Staake, Chief Executive Officer of Duisburger Hafen AG, made it clear that distinct quality criteria would be defined with reference to the selection of real estate. “Alongside the size of the site, the development situation in the Ruhr region as well as the prompt availability of sites will play an important role. Locations offering the best conditions will be able to profit from relocating companies.”
In doing so what was desirable was at least a bimodal connection, i.e. access to at least two of the main transport modes roads, rails or water. The chosen areas would be connected to and integrated with Duisburger Hafen’s existing international transport network. Through this networking the Ruhr region will become the largest inland logistics turntable in Europe with Duisburg as a leading hub and gateway for Central European markets.
Prof. Hans-Peter Noll, Chairman of the Board of RAG Montan Immobilien, added, “We are bundling our joint expertise to accelerate the development and marketing of potential logistics locations in the Ruhr. In doing so, we have to take account of both market demand and realization aspects in close coordination with local government.”
Peter Schrimpf, Executive board member of RAG AG, greeted the foundation of logport Ruhr. “As a shareholder of RAG Montan Immobilien and owner of Group sites we are interested in our subsidiary acting successfully in the market and that unused operational sites are brought back into economic circulation again in good time. With logport-Ruhr as a brand we are promising ourselves that appropriate value added will be generated from the sites in this way. It is just as important to us that structural change in the region gets an extra boost with this step.”
duisport and RAG Montan Immobilien will each have a 50 percent holding in the long-term strategic partnership logport-Ruhr, with its headquarters in Duisburg. The articles of association will be signed after agreement has been obtained from the committees responsible. Currently, several former mining sites and coal bunkers are being checked for their suitability for logistics use, including sites in Duisburg, Herne and Oberhausen. The target is to market the first sites from 2009.
