Customs Agent Gerlach Moves into Port of Duisburg

High cargo volumes boost demand for office space

Duisburg, 29 February 2008 – Gerlach Zolldienste GmbH will open new offices in the Port of Duisburg on 1 March 2008. The Geldern company rented half a floor, with some 200 sq.m. of office space, for a team of ten employees in Freihafen 6c. “The new premises take us closer to our work, because the Port of Duisburg is one of the international centers for the exchange of goods. Our expectations are high,” said Oliver Ruscheweyh, air and sea freight manager for the German region. Gerlach already runs sea and air freight customs agencies in Hamburg, Frankfurt/Main, Munich, Amsterdam, Zeebrugge, Rotterdam and Antwerp as well as at other locations. The customs clearance organization has now operated in the market for over 125 years.

“Importation and exportation handling, shipping method consultation, applications for licenses, customs agency services and fiscal agency services,” Ruscheweyh described the wide range of services offered by Gerlach. “As fiscal agents we provide for example non-German EU importers with the option to have their cargo cleared for free circulation in their country. Following customs clearance the cargo will be transported direct to its destination without any clearance in the importing EU country being necessary.”

The business of the customs agent has particularly benefited from the transformation of the bulk cargo port into a value-creating general cargo port. “Duisburg has become one of the leading European locations for the transshipment of cargo to destinations both inside and outside the European Union. Cargo volumes are increasing and foreign trade is expanding. Our business is therefore growing,” explained Ruscheweyh.

Gerlach has no reason to be concerned about its future in Duisburg. Cargo volumes have in recent years grown fast at the world’s largest inland port sometimes even at double-digit rates. “This growth stimulates demand for our customs clearance services,” commented Ruscheweyh.

“duisport creates perfect working conditions for logistic service providers such as these light and modern offices at this strategic location,” said Richard Schwarze who is responsible for property marketing in Duisburger Hafen AG. duisport will continue to offer variable office space in the Port itself. At the logport logistic park in Duisburg Rheinhausen, for instance, the logport Office Center extension has now been completed and can be rented by new tenants. Most of the first phase offices had already been marketed while construction work was still in progress. “In top location not only in logistic terms in the heart of logport with an unrestricted view of the DIT and D3T terminals,” remarked Schwarze.

Duisburger Hafen AG owns and operates the Port of Duisburg, the world’s largest inland port, on the confluence of the Ruhr and the Rhine. The duisport Group offers the complete infrastructure needed for port and logistics operations including a full-service investor support package. It also provides a wide range of logistics services which back up the portfolio of Port customers including packing logistics.
