Port of Duisburg and Transpetrol to Promote Joint Railroad Transportation Projects
Railroad Services Provided by duisport rail
Duisburg, 6 January 2004 – The Duisburger Hafen Group and Transpetrol, the international railroad forwarder, have agreed close cooperation. The umbrella contract concluded between duisport agency GmbH, duisport rail GmbH and Transpetrol GmbH, Hamburg, is intended to shift more dangerous cargo to the railroads. duisport rail already runs trains between Duisburg and Herne and provides services for Transpetrol’s Leuna-Duisburg-Rotterdam link.
Transpetrol is an international railroad forwarder specialized in oil and chemical products as well as liquid and bulk cargo. The company’s freight is moved both by legacy and new railroad carriers. VTG-Lehnkering is the majority shareholder of Transpetrol whose Chemical Division Manager Siegfried Braunschweig commented: "We welcome our cooperation with the Port of Duisburg, as it will allow us to implement our strategy of providing our customers with complete railroad-based system solutions."
Even before the conclusion of the agreement, duisport rail, a 100% subsidiary of Duisburger Hafen AG, started its operations for Transpetrol. Since June 2003, the Duisburg railroad operator has moved railroad tanker cars and tank containers between Duisburg (VTG tank farm and Duss combined transportation terminal) and Herne. The railroad company has also provided classification services for Trans-petrol’s Leuna-Duisburg-Rotterdam train between the logport and the Ruhrort port stations since September 2003. This train also mainly moves oil and chemical products which are transported by tank containers.
A Partner of Strategic Importance
Erich Staake, Duisburger Hafen AG’s Chief Executive Officer, and Executive Board member Thomas Schlipköther whose responsibilities include duisport rail are positive that the cooperation agreed with Transpetrol is another important step forward to implement the strategic objectives of the Port. "This cooperation shifts further cargo to Duisburg and the railroads with their low impact on the environment. Load at our Duisburg terminals will increase. Last, but certainly not least, Transpetrol is another important partner in our growing transportation network", Erich Staake argued.
