More Employment and more Value Added Through the Port of Duisburg

Over 36,000 jobs connected with the port / More than 2 billion Euros of value added in 2005 / duisport one of the world’s top 100 container ports

Duisburg, 26 September 2006 – Some 36,000 jobs are supported by the Port of Duisburg. The value added by the port to the economy is over 2.2 billion Euros. These data are among the main conclusions of a study of the economic importance of the Port of Duisburg recently completed by Regionomica, the Berlin consultants. The rate at which international logistics organizations have moved to Duisburg is remarkable. “During the last seven years, we have been able to win more than fifty companies for this logistics location. Jobs have been generated and the contribution to the regional economy has been substantial. The Regionomica study reflects this trend,” said Duisburger Hafen AG’s Chief Executive Officer Erich Staake.

Today, eleven percent of all jobs in Duisburg (8% in 2000) depend on the port. A total of 36,000 employees in the region work on posts created directly or indirectly by the port. “These posts are not limited to classic port companies such as shipping lines, warehouse operators and cargo handling companies. The port has actually during the last few years become an attractive location for road and railroad carriers which manage and control complex logistic processes,” explained Staake. Additional employment is created with port suppliers and other sectors not directly associated with the port in part outside the Duisburg region wrote the study authors who made a similar study for the logistics location Hamburg last year.

Total capital spending stimulated by the Port of Duisburg totaled some 250 million Euros in 2005. The value added directly or indirectly by the port to the economy amounted to over 2.2 billion Euros, as the study found. “No other inland port makes such a high contribution,” said Staake.

The world’s largest inland port has also considerably strengthened its leading position in the container segment of the market. The 2005 ranking of container ports on the basis of TEU port throughput was published in the July/August issue of the English-language Container Management journal. “Over 710,000 TEU and almost 1.3 million container movements (sea port method of counting) have propelled us into the world of the largest container ports around the globe,” said CEO Staake. “And the data for the first six months of the year give us good reason to expect that we will have substantially more containers than in 2005”
