The logport Story

Logport Logistic-Center Duisburg GmbH has since early 1999 developed and marketed the 650-acre former Krupp steel mill site in Rheinhausen on the western shore of the Rhine River.

The company was founded to set up a trimodal logistics center for high-grade general cargo and to win international logistics service providers for operations at the logport site. For these operations, the organization offers attractive tracts for lease or for purchase.

Since the start-up of activities at the beginning of 1999, site development and marketing schedules have been outperformed.

The Japanese NYK Group built for example its German headquarters at logport. Wincanton Trans European (formerly P&O Trans European) operates a 30,000sq.m. railroad terminal and Lord Jeffrey, the P & O Chairman, even referred to logport as the Silicon Valley of transportation services when he visited logport. Kühne + Nagel, the international Swiss logistics service provider that had already settled on the eastern shore of the Rhine River has built another 25,000sq.m. of warehousing area and has made Duisburg its central site in Western Europe. Rhenus has equally constructed a major terminal for contract logistics. 200,000sq.m. of warehousing area are already in operation at the logport site and another 200,000sq.m. will be completed over the next few years.

The quality of local infrastructure is, of course, a critical consideration in the siting studies of companies focused on logistics. The modernization of the old Krupp company port and the installation of the DIT Duisburg Intermodal Terminal were for this reasons vital to be able to market the logport site. The trimodal container terminal commissioned in October 2002 has become the heart of logport. With its capacity of 200,000 TEU, it is ideal for consolidating road, water and railroad cargo flows. And neighbouring DIT the new D3T Terminal has opened up in January 2008.
